Where to mountain bike in La Ventana?

“There are 3 of us in La Paz thinking of renting a car and coming down March 5 for the first time to La Vantana,we are not advanced riders so looking for more scenic. Maybe a 4 hour rental. Wondering what you would recommend and what’s available for ebikes.”

Please see some of our favorite mountain biking trails in La Ventana in this video.

The Two Main Trail Systems

La Ventana has two main trail networks:

  1. North Trail System (El Sargento Trails) – Offers a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails with options for technical climbs and fast descents.
  2. La Ventana South Trails (Cactus Trails) – These trails are more beginner-friendly, with flowy singletrack, stunning desert views, and minimal elevation gain.

Beginner-Friendly Trails

If you’re new to mountain biking or just want a smooth ride with epic scenery, head to the South Trails. You’ll find gentle elevation changes, flowy sections through cacti, and plenty of opportunities to extend or shorten your ride. The trails are accessible from a dirt road just a mile from Playa Central, making it easy to ride straight from town.

Intermediate & Advanced Trails

For riders looking for more elevation and technical features, the North Trail System is where it’s at. Some recommended routes:

  • Los Huesos & Pista Pista – A mellow climb leading to a network of trails with various descent options.
  • Mala Mujer – One of the most fun downhill trails in the area, taking you from the top of the ridge all the way down.
  • Las Minitas to Alta Vista – A longer ride with epic views of the ocean, cacti-covered hills, and La Ventana Bay.

Trail Maps & Best Times to Ride

Trailforks and AllTrails are great for navigating the trails—check out the Trailforks map for the latest updates. Mornings and late afternoons are the best times to ride, as midday can get hot.

Final Tips

  • If you’re riding from La Ventana, expect a 5-mile road ride to the trailheads, or start from El Sargento or Rancho Cacachilas Bike Shop for a shorter approach.
  • Both the North and South trails offer different experiences—if you have time, ride both!
  • Bring lots of water, there aren’t any facilities at the trailheads.
