The Rogue River in Southern Oregon is one of the best multi-day whitewater trips in the West. This was my 7th time down this section of the river, and every trip reveals something new! With scenic camps, side hikes, and (if you’re lucky) good weather, the Rogue is a must-do. Here’s a day-by-day recap, covering…
What an epic trip @Sharon! So stoked to get there one day and run this ourselves. Hopefully we can do this in some packrafts!
How do you know you’re ready to run the Rogue River’s Class III and IV rapids? Are there options to go around the class IV rapids to make the trip easier?
Also, was this your put in and take out?
Hi Reet - great questions!
You could totally run this in packrafts - that would be epic! Yes, that was our put-in and take-out!
I’d recommend being confident running class III+ on day trips in the craft you would be using for the trip, and starting out with easier multi-days. Some great beginner multi-day trips in the area would be the Lower Klamath, Deschutes, John Day, and Grand Ronde rivers! It’s also great to have someone on the trip who has seen it before as they’d be able to lead being more comfortable with the lines. Also, I highly recommend a River Rescue Course for anyone who spends time on rivers, so that you’re prepared in case things don’t go as planned!
Rainey Falls has a Class III line, but there’s no option to portage Mule Creek or Blossom Bar. However, on a trip like ours that had kayaks with rafts as well, a beginner kayaker could toss their boat on a raft for those rapids if they weren’t feeling confident, which makes it an excellent first kayak multi-day!
