I'm planning a La Parguera bioluminescent bay kayaking trip and have some questions:

What time of year is best for bioluminescence kayaking? Does the time of year matter? Is it best to see when the moon is not as bright?

Are there any kayaking tours where you can also snorkel to experience the bioluminescence?

Are you allowed to swim in La Parguera bay?

  1. The best time of year to see the bioluminescence is during the dry months from December to May, and a short dry period from June to July. While you can see it year-round, heavy rainfall can cause runoff and mix the coastal waters, reducing visibility. The bioluminescence shines the brightest when the water is still, allowing the organisms to gather. The best nights of the month to view the bioluminescence is closest to the New Moon. During this time, there is minimal to no moonlight, providing the darkest conditions for the bioluminescence to be most visible.

  2. La Parguera is the only place in Puerto Rico where you are allowed to swim with the bioluminescence! In all other locations, swimming is not permitted, and you must stay in your kayak. However, in La Parguera, you can book tours that offer the option to swim, allowing you to dive right into the magical experience!

  3. La Parguera is the only place in Puerto Rico where you can swim with the bioluminescence! It’s a magical moment as any movement in the water causes the plankton to glow. You’ll be swimming surrounded by the glow!
